100 BLACK MEN OF OMAHA TAKES FIRST PLACE AT NATIONAL AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY CHALLENGE COMPETITION IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA ON JUNE 10, 2011
The 25th Annual National Conference of 100 Black Men of America comprised of 116 Chapters was held in San Francisco, California from June 7th – 12th. Omaha Burke students, Kelcea Barnes, Nixon Chica and Garyth Barnes, represented the local Omaha Chapter, and after two days of intense competition were declared national champions on Friday evening, June 10, 2011. The Burke team, who brought home the winning trophy, was coached by Burke’s Vice Principal Rachelle Walker. The students will receive college scholarships and gift certificates from Macy’s department store.
Locally, the 100 Black Men of Omaha (100BMO) held its 11th Annual African American History Challenge (AAHC) on Saturday, February 26, 2011, 4pm at North High School. The winning local team from the junior division also attended the National Competition. Representing the100BMO at the junior division was Beveridge Magnet Middle School students, Jordan Keller, Danielle Jorgenson and Henry Harrison. The students were coached by Chad Carlson and Sheila McCauley. The Beveridge team made it to the semi-finals at the National Competition. All students and coaches were also treated to a San Francisco Giants home game in Oracle’s corporate suite. Local sponsors in Omaha were Cox Communication and Wells Fargo Bank.
The AAHC is a national educational program designed by the 100 Black Men of America to enhance the study of and encourage the appreciation of African-American history and culture
