In 2008, the 100 Black Men Omaha in collaboration with Omaha Public Schools (OPS), established the 100 Academy of Omaha. The academy was specifically designed for 3rd grade boys who could benefit from enrichment in math and reading. The academy was created to positively address the statistics associated with African American boys falling drastically behind their white counterparts after the fourth grade. Needless to say, that and truency, has had a direct correlation with drop out rates later on in their educational process.
The goal of the 100 Academy of Omaha is to make every student “Responsible, Respectful and Ready to Lead". This series of Saturday extended learning opportunities for third through sixth grade students is uniquely designed to help students improve their math and reading skills.
Participants receive additional support from certified teachers to master concepts in reading, writing and mathematics. Through this extended learning opportunity, students reeive additional time and assistance to discover their talents, form positive friendships, and connect with their community. The students are tested every Saturday on the computer, to identify weaknesses, help master core skills and evaluate improvements made. This has served as an excellent evaluation tool for the initial placement of the student and to show their progress throughout the year. It also helps academy teachers to indentify student’s weaknesses and where best to focus their teaching efforts. Although one of our newest programs, it has served over 200 at-risk students since 2008.
