African American History Challenge

The African American History Challenge is the 100 Black Men of Omaha’s longest running program. The competition is a national educational reading program designed by the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. to enhance the study of African-American history and culture among middle and high school students.

Since starting locally in 2001, the 100 BMO has provided over $225,000 in scholarship awards and prizes to deserving Omaha area students. This program annually impacts over 150 metro-area students and touches over 400 families to date. Over 1,500 students have been impacted by this program. Winners from each division are provided an all-expense paid trip to the 100 Black Men of America’s annual conference to compete among other 100 chapters for additional scholarship awards and prizes.

The following is a brief quote from our June press release after attending the National 100 Black Men’s Conference held June 7-12, 2011:

“The 25th Annual National Conference of 100 Black Men of America comprised of 116 Chapters was held in San Francisco, California from June 7th – 12th.   Omaha Burke students, Kelcea Barnes, Nixon Chica and Garyth Barnes, represented the local Omaha Chapter, and after two days of intense competition were declared national champions on Friday evening, June 10, 2011.

Testimonial--While I am at school I really don’t get to hear much about my own history. So it was nice to get to explore and learn more about my heritage...The scholarship will be used to pay my tuition for a Law Litigation Program.  Maurice Green IV, Millard North High School student
